Puyallup Indian Tribe Salmon Restoration Programs

As directed by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians the Puyallup Tribal Fisheries Department shall, “preserve, protect and enhance salmon in usual and accustomed areas, and the water resources that determine their viability.” It’s the department’s goal to fulfill its obligations by leading and participating in habitat restoration efforts, harvest management/policy, fish enhancement projects and research and monitoring activities.

The Puyallup River is located in mid-central Puget Sound, Washington and enters into Commencement Bay. The Puyallup River watershed encompasses 438 square miles and includes three major tributaries: the Carbon River, Mowich River and South Prairie Creek. The Puyallup, Carbon and Mowich Rivers originate from glaciers located in Mt. Rainier National Park and exhibit the classic features of glacial streams: frequently shifting braided channels, high turbidity and low temperatures.

Diru Creek Salmon Hatchery

Diru Creek Hatchery is located on Diru Creek (Rainbow Springs), a tributary to Clarks Creek in Puyallup. The Puyallup Tribe currently raises 2.3 million chum smolts for release into the lower Puyallup River. This program significantly augments a Tribal River fishery and All Citizen purse seine fishery in East and West Pass in Puget Sound.

In 2006, the Puyallup Tribe, in partnership with WDFW and the Muckleshoot Tribe, began artificially propagating White River winter steelhead. Steelhead brood-stock (approximately 10 males and 10 females) are collected from the White River USACE fish trap in Buckley and are held, spawned, incubated, and reared at the Puyallup Tribe’s Diru Creek hatchery for a year.

Clarks Creek Salmon Hatchery

Clarks Creek is an urban tributary flowing into the lower Puyallup River, entering the Puyallup at RM 5.8. In 2004, the Puyallup Tribal Fisheries Department began acclimating and releasing Fall Chinook from its Clarks Creek facility, thereby discontinuing all Chinook releases from the Diru Creek Hatchery. The incubation building at Clarks Creek Salmon Hatchery houses 32 incubator stacks capable of holding up to 77,000 Chinook eggs, for a total capacity of approximately 2.5 million eggs. Additionally, we rear 100,000 Coho for the Lake Kapowsin Net-Pen Program.

Northwest Salmon Research

It is our mission to help preserve and enhance our unique salmon culture through support of salmon research and educational activities, understanding best practices, sharing outcomes and raising public awareness about the importance of increasing the numbers of healthy, sustainable adult salmon stocks for the shared benefit of ALL stakeholders.

NWSR is committed to projects that support both wild salmon recovery and enhancement programs. We participate in research, education and public awareness activities and projects in areas where we can make measurable positive impact on improving healthy, sustainable wild and hatchery salmon returns.

Our once vibrant Chinook (King) salmon runs are rapidly declining, threatening the very existence of our Southern Resident Orcas – and this entire region’s unique salmon culture. It’s abundantly clear, the Salish Sea and ALL the Pacific Northwest waters need more sustainable, healthy adult Chinook salmon.

Once numbering in the 1000s, our Southern Resident Killer (Orca) Whales are now fewer than 75. The Salish Sea (Puget Sound and adjacent coastal waters) is their primary home where they rely on safe, clean, waters to breed, raise their young and feed almost exclusively on Chinook (King) Salmon. We are working to improve the salmon populations which will also help save our SRKW.

EDUCATION & AWARENESS

Developing “hands on” experiences and communications that will impart greater public understanding and awareness, while engaging volunteers and schools in projects that will have a measurable positive impact on increasing sustainable healthy adult salmon populations.

RESEARCH & BEST PRACTICES

Leveraging research, technology, collaboration and citizen scientists to advance the body of knowledge and best practices that will address the urgent needs and accelerate the restoration of abundant populations of salmon in the Puget Sound (the Salish Sea) and throughout the Pacific Northwest.

ENHANCEMENT & RESTORATION

Supporting and developing salmon enhancement and habitat restoration projects in conjunction with key partners (Indian Tribes, Government Agencies, other salmon advocacy groups, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and ALL stake holders) to increase the sustainable numbers of healthy adult salmon.

THE C.O.R.E. PROJECT

CHINOOK, ORCA RECOVERY EDUCATION

An education and public awareness project in collaboration with SAMI (Science and Math Institute) School, WDFW, local Indian Tribes and multiple other salmon & SRKW advocates, to engage students (from various public, private and tribes schools and programs) to raise, study and release Chinook salmon at (and from) temporary holding facilities / locations throughout Puget Sound/Salish Sea and other key watersheds. The goals are to inspire students and the public, to support the advancement of research, education and public awareness while addressing the call to action made by our most respected Environmental, Marine & Wildlife advocacy groups.

A LONG HISTORY OF INNOVATION

Baker Manufacturing Company, LLC. was founded in 1873, in Evansville, WI to build steam engines. Not long after development, the company realized the steam engine would not be profitable on its own. The decision to build an additional machine shop and foundry to conduct repair work was made. Then in 1874, the company began manufacturing windmills under the Monitor name. This was the beginning of what would become a long list of innovative products for the water industry. By 1926, the company was selling windmills worldwide. Baker Manufacturing Company, LLC. managed to develop new products and sustain through the Great Depression. World War II brought new challenges and opportunities. The company was called upon to develop new products to be used by the Department of Defense. In 1953, Baker Manufacturing Company, LLC. developed the pitless unit designed to produce “Better Farming and Better Living.”

The company continues to develop more products for the residential water industry and produce castings. In 1977, Baker Manufacturing Company, LLC. purchased Haight Pump out of the Milwaukee area which then moved to the Evansville location in 1981. In 2008, Baker Manufacturing Company, LLC. purchased Campbell Manufacturing to complement the Monitor Water Well Division, and that is how the company stands today.
