What is 6PPD and why is it harmful to marine life?

6PPD, or N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N’-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, is a chemical compound that is commonly used as an antioxidant in the production of rubber, particularly in vehicle tires. It is added to tires to protect them from degradation.  6PPD helps extend the lifespan of tires and is widely used in the automotive industry.  Recent research has raised concerns about the environmental impact of 6PPD, especially in the context of marine life.
